The 2019 Fall Meeting of the PSM took place on October 19 at the Swedish Club of Detroit. Thanks to members from the Downriver Poets and Playwrights group and The Crazy Wisdom Poetry Circle (in particular: Dennis White, Joe and Mary Kelty and Ed Morin) for all their hard work.
The program was presented by Mary Minock. Minock, current president of the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature, who spoke and presented workshop prompts on “Poets Writing Memoir.” Besides telling the strategies other poets use in the increasingly popular genre of memoir, she revealed her own methods in creating a publishing success, The WayBack Room: A Memoir of a Detroit Childhood. One reviewer called this book “one of the most emotionally honest memoirs you will ever read.”
Minock is an accomplished poet whose work has appeared in literary journals like Patterson Literary Review, MARGIE, The MacGuffin, and Mid-America, as well as anthologies like Abandon Automobile and Water Music. Her second collection of poems, Wildflowers of Detroit, blends narrative and lyric poetry from the past and the present. She is writing a second memoir covering the 1960s.
